Electrical Safety for Construction Sites: Temporary Power, Cords, and Equipment
Aug 20, 2026Temporary electrical systems are installed, moved, damaged, and expanded throughout a construction project. Cords cross active work areas, panels are exposed to dust and weather, and equipment may be used before permanent systems are complete. These conditions require regular inspection and clear control of who may install or repair electrical components.
Electrical safety should address shock, electrocution, burns, arc hazards, fire, and secondary injuries caused by a worker’s reaction to contact.
Control temporary power installations
Temporary wiring and distribution equipment should be installed for the intended environment and protected from physical damage. Panels, disconnects, and overcurrent devices should be accessible, identified, and protected from unauthorized contact.
Open knockouts, missing covers, exposed conductors, and improvised connections should be corrected immediately.
Inspect extension cords and portable tools
Cords should be checked for damaged insulation, missing ground pins, crushed sections, exposed conductors, and unauthorized repairs. Equipment with defects should be removed from service rather than temporarily taped and returned to use.
Cords should be routed to reduce trip hazards and protected from vehicles, sharp edges, doors, water, and hot work.
Plan for wet and conductive locations
Rain, standing water, concrete work, metal structures, and confined spaces can increase electrical risk. Equipment, protection methods, and grounding or circuit-interruption measures should be selected for the conditions.
Employees should not handle energized plugs, cords, or tools with wet hands or stand in water while connecting equipment.
Maintain clearance from overhead and underground lines
Before moving cranes, lifts, scaffolds, ladders, or long materials, the contractor should identify overhead electrical hazards and establish required clearances and controls. Underground lines should be located before excavation or drilling.
The work plan should define who contacts the utility, who establishes barriers or spotters, and what happens if conditions change.
Restrict electrical work to qualified personnel
Employees should not open panels, repair cords, or modify temporary systems unless they are authorized and qualified for the task. Lockout, de-energization, testing, and verification procedures should be addressed where applicable.
