Scaffold Safety: What Contractors Should Inspect Before Each Shift
Aug 11, 2026A scaffold can appear stable while missing a critical tie, brace, guardrail, access component, or properly supported plank. Because scaffolds are exposed to changing loads, weather, traffic, and other trades, contractors should evaluate them before employees begin work and whenever conditions could affect their integrity.
The applicable inspection duties depend on the scaffold type and work activity, but a consistent pre-use review helps identify visible defects and unauthorized changes.
Foundation, base, and stability
Check that the scaffold is supported on a firm, adequate foundation and that base plates, mudsills, casters, outriggers, and leveling components are properly installed. Look for settlement, undermining, impact damage, or movement caused by weather or nearby excavation.
Confirm that required ties, guys, braces, and outriggers remain installed. Structural members should not be removed to create access or accommodate another trade without an approved alternative.
Platforms and loading
Platforms should be fully and correctly planked for the scaffold type, with components in good condition and supported according to their design. Scaffold lumber should be visually inspected for defects before and during use, and defective material should not remain in service.
Materials and debris should not accumulate beyond the intended load. The crew should understand the scaffold’s capacity and avoid using it as general storage.
Access and fall protection
Employees need a safe, unobstructed means of access such as a properly installed ladder, stair, or walkway. Cross braces should not be treated as access unless the system is specifically designed for that purpose.
Guardrails, midrails, toeboards, gates, and personal fall-protection systems should be checked where required. Openings created for material handling should be controlled when not actively in use.
Electrical, overhead, and environmental hazards
Inspect clearance from energized electrical lines and equipment. Evaluate falling-object hazards and provide overhead protection, barricades, or other controls when needed.
Work on scaffolds during storms or high winds requires careful evaluation under the applicable rule. Slippery conditions, wind screens, tarps, and accumulated water can change loading and stability.
Control modifications
Unauthorized changes are a common problem. Employees and subcontractors should know who may alter, erect, or dismantle the scaffold. California requirements call for scaffold erection and dismantling to be performed under the supervision and direction of a qualified person.
